Needs and Desires
recent drawings (2019 - ongoing)

These recent drawings have two very different motivations.

The first set (below) are about looking and drawing, but they are really a way to work alongside my daughter. It’s a silent collaboration of sorts. She’s working on something, while I am watching her hands move, trying to catch up. The constancy and the repetition of the period, often no more than an hour at a time are about staying present, trying to feel like I am still making something during these uncertain times, and feeling fortunate to have this precious time to spend together.

Set 1

This next group of drawings revolve around works in progress in the studio. They run parallel to my broader studio practice which is rooted in chance, intuition and repetition.

There are three different modes of inquiry here - as sketches before starting a painting, as mixed media variations on top of digital prints of in progress paintings, and as independent works that continue during and sometimes after a painting is completed. They are as much about figuring out what to do next on a painting as much as playing and thinking through a different set of mediums and one a vastly different scale to see what happens.
